John Mercredi Obituary

It is with great sadness to announce the loss of our loved one Johnny, who passed away peacefully on Sunday January 19, 2020, at St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, Manitoba, at the age of 68 years.

Johnny met and married the love of his life Marilyn Easter and they were united on December 28, 1973. Just recently, they celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary.

Throughout their marriage, he provided for his family. Working and setting an example for his kids about responsibility and taking care of their families. He was a strong supporter of education and encouraged young people to stay in school. Johnny served his community and was a Councilor for Moose Lake Community Council for many years. His first job was training under New Careers which led him to a logging job. He started working at Moose Lake Loggers and was employed for 30 years working in different fields. When Loggers shut down and went mechanical, he assisted his sons Floyd and Junior, working alongside with them teaching his trades. Later on, he settled down and helped raise his grandkids. During that time, he ran for elections on the reserve and got in as Councilor for a two-year term, spanning 4 consecutive years. He interacted with the public and was always there to provide support and advice. This gave him stability and he was interactive in politics. He went out of his way in helping the people and oversaw the Social Department and also held the health board portfolio. He also sat as a Board of Director with the Cree Nation Tribal Health. He definitely was a pillar of our community.

Johnny looked forward to his family phoning him and visiting over the phone. Johnny would go driving around visiting from his vehicle, stopping to talk with people on the road, he enjoyed his smoke rides. He always went to visit his grandchildren and checked up on them regularly. This was routine for him.

Johnny was a person with a big heart. His presence was always cheerful and full of laughs when he was around. He joked with people and the whole community knew him, he was a very outgoing person. He enjoyed teasing his nieces and nephews and was close to everyone that crossed his path. Johnny and his wife were always very supportive when someone went through an ordeal or celebration and assisted in any way they could. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. His love and compassion brought us together.

Johnny leaves his wife Marilyn; sons Floyd (Salina), Johnny Jr (Miranda), Clinton, Clayton (Katheryn), Brendan (Rebecca), Warren Easter, Brian Azure, Chance Mercredi; daughter Lacey (Shayne) Easter; brothers Marcel (Lois) Mercredi, Ovide Mercredi; sisters Pearl (Ross) Thomas, Mabel (Brian) Cook, Catherine Mercredi, Marie Mercredi, Nicole Mercredi, Evelyn (Glen) Munroe; brothers-in-law John (Jeanie) Easter, Donald Easter; sisters-in-law Florence Ducharme, Ann (Charlie) Nasikapow, Verna Grey, Helen Easter, Louisa Easter; aunties Mabel Cooper, Louise (Harold) McKay; Godchildren Debbie Grey, Deedee Demery; grandchildren, great grandchildren and numerous cousins and relatives too many to mention.
