Therese “Terry” Dumas was born on Monday, April 14th, 1930 in The Pas, to Christine and Patrick Dumas. She was the eldest of 11 children.
The family lived in Herb Lake Landing until Terry was a teenager, where she was her mother’s helper and helped raise her siblings, Yvette, Yvonne, Annette, Clara, Marie, Leo, Cyril, Patrick, Noel and Michael.
She enjoyed sewing and singing from a young age and could be found fishing at the local lake. By 1950 the family had relocated to The Pas where she met her future husband Steve Anaka, playing in a band; Vickory’s Orchestra. They had a 5 year long romance before they eloped and married in Flin Flon, October 29th, 1955.
Together they enjoyed travelling, dancing, gardening, and being active community members. Mom was a faithful Catholic and a member of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish. Terry was a long time member of the Catholic Women’s League, The Community Choir, The Hospital Auxiliary, The Glee Club, The Royal Purple, and the Trapper’s Festival. She held many jobs at St. Anthony’s Hospital. She later held a long term position as a MTS Telephone Operator, retiring in 1995. She also worked for the Department of Social Services.
Terry and Steve were blessed with two children, Paul and Stephanie. She enjoyed her time at home with the kids as a homemaker. Gardening was her summer passion, she maintained two large gardens yielding an abundance for her canning and their farmer’s market customers. In the winter months her house became a factory for all her craft show items (baking, sewing, knitting and preserves). She loved Clearwater Lake and its sandy beaches and would never turn down a drive to go check out the lake. Terry and family travelled many Christmas seasons by train to Ontario to visit good friends Rita and John Fouillard and family.
Terry loved her grandchildren Ashley, Paisley, Otto and Hendrik and great grandchildren Rihanna and Braylon. Terry was a loyal and active member of the community into her senior years until she was slowed down by Parkinson’s. We would like to thank her good friends Rita, Wendy, Grace, Lorraine, Barb, Shirley and the countless others for helping her in her activities after Steve passed away in 2001. A proud accomplishment of mother’s was acquiring her driver’s license in her 70’s.
Terry was extremely grateful for the care she received at Northern View Lodge (The Pas) and Dinsdale Personal Care Home (Brandon). Terry fought hard but eventually passed away on Monday, May 6, 2019 from complications due to Parkinson’s. She had a peaceful passing with family by her side.
