Marcel
Constant
Jan 21, 1969 — Jul 8, 2026
Opaskwayak, Manitoba
Marcel was born on January 21, 1969 to the late Patrick and Harriet Constant at the St Anthony's Hospital in The Pas, Manitoba.
Marcel lived all his life on Opaskwayak Cree Nation, he went to school at the Big Eddy Day School, Mary Duncan, Opasquia and Scott Bateman. Before he got sick he talked about going back to evening school to get his Grade 12, since he worked as a Bus Driver during the day. But his cancer diagnosis would take a lot of time traveling to appointments, so he didn't get to make this goal.
He worked for 19 years for OCN Parks and Recreation, in the beautification department, where he was a supervisor of the crew, alongside his bestfriend/brother Banger. They had many crews over the years, and each summer they all worked hard to keep the community clean and on schedule for all the community events. This work became too hard on his body and he started to look for a career shift.
It was then when Omar and Scamp let him know a Bus Driver course was coming up and encouraged him to take it. He spent that spring in the course and passed his Class 1. Which meant he would retire from the Beautification Crew.
During his Bus Driver career, he was happier, he cared and loved the kids, his route was the Farmer Road Street. The Big Eddy kids would often give him grief when he was not there to pick them up, saying to him "Where did you go? Don't leave us now!" When there was a call out after school that a child did not make it home, he along with his fellow bus drivers would jump into alert mode, recalling every child they dropped off that day. They make sure they know all the kids on their buses and can give information to help track down the child, which every time it did help. That was just the kind of person he was so kind and caring.
#93 love for soccer came at an early age, he played in school and on many youth teams. When Marcel was a young teenager, he was a part of the soccer team that went to Sweden in 1985, which was unheard of, for a native soccer team. It was one of his best memories in his soccer life.
It wasn't until he had, has his forward position on his famous and beloved Big Eddy Warriors Soccer Club, he was truly in love and obsessed to play hard alongside many teammates over his 20+ years. Playing hard and giving his all, was a natural talent for him, it came so easy, he could score those important winning goals, tie goals and extra time winners. He had a few signature header moves or dummy plays, that made the game interesting and fun. Many times, when playing in Saskatchewan, if people knew the Warriors were playing a game, they would draw big crowds of fans to come watch them. Which eventually led to many friendships with other teams in Saskatchewan and Moose Lake. After his retirement he would tell his wife and kids about the many tournaments the Warriors played all over Western Canada.
It touched his heart to hear that they would revive the Warriors name and combine a team to play in his honor this summer. We know he will be watching and cheering hard for them from the side lines, in spirit. As many people knew his voice and humor when a bad call was made, "FOR WHAT" he would yell out loud to the refs, from one of his favorite spots.
He was a sports fan of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, but he was a die hard Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey fan. And I mean die hard Leafs fan, he could probably fill up our home with Leaf stuff if I let him. His all time favorite hockey player was #93 Doug Gilmour, which is where his soccer number came from. He attended many Leafs game over the years in Winnipeg with his wife and kids, but his favorite was to watch them live in Toronto. Which he tried to do this every year, which he made his wife become his travel agent, doing all the planning and booking for them. But seeing how excited and happy it made him, to see his smile and love for the game, it was no trouble at all. He did play hockey as well as a youth and adult, which was apart of his natural talent he had for sports he loved. He loved to watch all kinds of sports, his TV was often on TSN every evening. Only time changing it was when he swore and changed it when the Leaf's did poorly. He would watch old time movies and TV shows, since his illness kept him in pain, so he rested in bed a lot.
Another favorite past time was his love for music, one of his favorite rock bands was Motley Crue, which he seen in concert many times over his lifetime. And when he was in the right mood at a social he would show off his dance moves and get you on the dance floor. Which he was often egged on by his other close bestfriends/brothers Prute (David) and Ted. These four guys were famously known as the 4 brothers, Marcel, Banger, Prute and Ted, they shared a close bond over the years, which he loved and cherished them until his last day.
When you were around these guys, especially Mar, you had to watch what you said, as they had many funny cut you up lines and famous come back lines like "COME ON MAN". His humor was on another level and like no other and will be missed by everyone that was fortunate enough to spend time with him.
For family life, he was blessed to have his son Dustin and daughter Stephanie. Introducing Dustin into hockey at a young age, by buying him figure skates for his first year. He watched Dustin play hockey and soccer over his years, being there to give support and always as a proud dad. Once Steph, had a fever seizure when she was small, and he remembered it clearly and from then on, became the protective the father that he was.
Mario had eye for his wife Noreen, way before she even knew. Once they started dating he knew that she was the love of his life and would someday marry her, as he would often tell people who were close to them. They spent their life together working and travelling across Canada over the years while raising the 3 girls Admarie, Amery and Amy, and for the past 6 years, the two granddaughters Ayla and Tessa.
Noreen and Marcel were officially married in July of 2023, and one month later he was diagnosed with Cancer. Taking things one day at a time, he started his fight against cancer and together they took it head on for 2 years and 10 months. He was a true pillar of strength and determination going through many rounds of radiation, chemotherapy, surgeries, and more recently more radiation and chemotherapy.
Beside his late mother Harriet, the other important woman is his life was his baby sister Tamara. These two had many good laughs as they shared the same humor and love for Ernest. In the last year he often asked Tam to travel with him to go watch hockey or mini trips to go yard sailing, it became their thing.
Marcel as a grandpa, was a true joy for him, he loved his grandchildren Rylan, Conner, Eddie and Ezme so much. He enjoyed watching Rylan and Conner play hockey whenever he got the chance to go. He made sure to visit the newest granddaughter as much as possible when we travelled into Winnipeg.
Since Eddie was often brought over to visit Kokum and Papa almost daily, he grew a special bond with Eddie, that was his boss, his tail, his telephone assistant and favorite napping partner. He often recorded their time together on his cell phone. Making sure to look high and low for any spider man toy to come home with when he travelled, so he could see how excited Eddie looked. These two were inseparable.
Marcel was survived by his wife Noreen; kids Dustin, Stephanie, Admarie (Ethan), Amery and Amy; grandkids Ayla, Tessa, Rylan, Conner, Eddie and Ezme; brothers Patrick (Georgina), Terry and Lorne; sisters Tamara and Charlotte (Vince); and cousin/sister Rhonda; father in law Gary (Wilma) Cook; sister in laws Inez Wilson, Kim Whitehead, Mandy (Sheldon) Tornquist; best friends/brothers Banger, Ted, Prute; also, so many numerous uncles, aunties, cousins, nieces, nephews, godchildren, former co-workers, teammates and friends.
