Sandy Morrison was born on July 5, 1947, to Andrew and Harriet Morrison, in Inverness County, Nova Scotia. He spent his youth with his brother Paddy (Marilyn), sister Jess, and friends and family on Cape Breton Island, earning the nickname “Sandy Red” for his red hair. As an adult Sandy hitchhiked to Manitoba where he met and married Mildred McLeod. They remained in Snow Lake for their 42-year marriage. Sandy worked in the mines in Northern Manitoba as a cage tender and shaft inspector, as a labourer at Wekusko Falls Campground, and was well known for his willingness to take on any job, earning himself the nickname “Handi-Sandy.”
Sandy passed away after a few health battles, at the age of 77, on December 22, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family. He is survived by his wife Millie, children Shanna and David (Vicki), his grand and great grandchildren Greg (Katie, Bryce, Myles), Sarah, Jessa, Rodric, Redmond, Nora and Naija. He will be very sadly missed by his brother Paddy (Marilyn), sister Jess, sister-in-law Wendy, brother-in-law Rocky, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and family members. Sandman will remain in the hearts of his many many friends, and his genuine, positive influence remains an inspiration for all that knew him. He was pre-deceased by his parents Andrew and Harriet, his niece Regan Thomas, his in-laws Marline and David McLeod, and many good friends.
Sandy was a handi-man, and could always be relied on to fix, or at least attempt to fix, any problem. If Sandy didn’t have it, or couldn’t find it, then you didn’t need it. He was an incredible friend and teacher, and his compassion and patience were endless. He liked to always be working, or at least puttering away at something. You could always find him helping someone, with no expectations. Sandy saw the best and the beauty in everything, and everyone, and believed anyone could do anything that they put their mind to.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, and anyone wishing to donate in Sandy’s memory may do so to a charity of their choice.
