Barry Todd Obituary

Barry was born Wednesday, September 6, 1944 in the Irvine Central Maternity Home in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland to Floyd and Janet Todd.  He came to Canada on the SS Leticia in 1946 and lived in many towns and cities as his dad made his way working across Canada.  He attended many schools and made many friends along the way until he finally ended up in The Pas.

His mum worked at the Dutch Drive-In as a great cook and while he was there to see her in 1964, he met the love of his life, Marion, who was carhopping that day.  He thought her last name was McGregor and he was dating a Scottish girl until his dad told him that Ukrainian girl was going to cause him a lot of trouble along the way.  That’s when he realized that her last name was Madrigga.  They were married in October 1967 and were blessed with three sons, Barry Jr., Shane and Phillip, who unfortunately died at birth.

Barry soon went to work at Churchill Forest Industries, River Sawmill, Manfor, Repap and retired from Tolko.  While he worked there, he made many friends, whose friendships lasted over the years.  He enjoyed working with them and they all respected him which he really appreciated.

In his younger days, Barry was very active in The Pas Stock Car Club.  He started out driving No. 77 and finished driving The General Lee, No. 01.  He raced for several years and won many trophies.  He also served his turn as president of the club.

Barry also loved his dogs and had about 5 of them over the years.  He loved to take them out for their runs every day and they loved him too.  He was a great supporter of the Pitbull Terriers and got upset when anyone called them down because it wasn’t the dogs what were bad, it was their owners.

Another activity that Barry really enjoyed was camping and he owned a few campers over the years.  He sincerely loved his family and his greatest pleasure was his grandchildren.  He loved every one of them dearly and spent as much time with them as he could.  His only regret was living so far away from them.  He was a great hockey dad as well and spent many nights and weekends supporting his boys in their games.  In a lot of cases, the team wouldn’t have made it to a tournament if it wasn’t for Barry making all the transportation arrangements, many times himself driving a van load of boys to their games.  He also spent time as an assistant coach.  His sons and grandchildren have many fond memories of their dad and grandpa.

Barry is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marion; sons Barry Jr. (Denise) and Shane; grandchildren Beth (Brian), London (Chelsey), Logan, Mikayla (Alex), Mallory and Fallon and many nieces and nephews and other relatives too numerous to mention.

He was predeceased by his infant son Phillip; his dad Floyd; his mother Janet; father-in-law Phillip Madrigga and mother-in-law Gladys Madrigga.

Sincere thanks to the doctor and staff in Emergency, staff on the 2nd Floor, and especially to the Homecare ladies - they are amazing!  Special thanks to brother Jack who has been a real pillar of strength.

In keeping with family wishes, cremation took place and a service of remembrance to celebrate Barry’s life was held Saturday, November 16, 2019, 2:00 pm, at Christ Church Anglican, The Pas, Manitoba, with Rev. Deacon Maureen Maciesza presiding.  A reception followed at Christ Church Parish Hall.  A private family interment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations to The Pas and Area Animal Shelter Incorporated, Box 4079, The Pas, Manitoba, R9A 1S2, would be appreciated by Barry’s family.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
