Mom was born on December 16, 1945, in The Pas, the daughter of Henry and Flora (Constant) Personius.
Mom married the love of her life, Dad on July 22, 1966. Though she had already known him from his time playing soccer for her father’s team, their marriage became a lifelong love story filled with devotion, laughter, challenges, and resilience. Together they had seven children: Amanda (“Scamp”), Anita, Rhonda, Vanessa “Bunny” (Norm), the late Shelly, Relic (Angie) and Kristen.
Throughout her life, Mom worked in several places in and around Opaskwayak Cree Nation. One of her earliest jobs was at the hospital at Clearwater Lake working in laundry while still very young. Mom dedicated many years of service to Rod McGillivary Care Home, where she eventually retired. In the past 10 years she worked as an Elder at Joe A. Ross School, which she really enjoyed.
When Mom was not working, she loved playing bingo with her bingo buddies, socializing with friends and family, cooking, and baking. She enjoyed watching movies and television shows, but most often she was on the go. If someone in the family wanted to visit, Kris would say "She's gone with the wind", which meant Mom was somewhere enjoying her freedom. Family meant everything to her. She rarely missed important family gatherings — graduations, birthdays, barbecues, suppers, and celebrations — always making time to attend when invited.
Mom was also a devoted soccer fan who loved cheering on her son and later her grandchildren from the sidelines. Her passion for the game always shone through, as she enthusiastically called out encouragement as if she were playing or coaching herself.
Lastly, Mom loved to travel. She frequently traveled with her husband throughout northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan and even enjoyed a memorable trip to Las Vegas. She visited the United States several times and once accompanied her father Henry to meet extended members of the Personius family there.
On October 3, 1998, Mom lost her husband, her partner through life’s battles and triumphs. Before his passing, Dad asked if she was still his wife, and she lovingly answered yes. He told her she would see many things and would one day see her “Chapans.”
Mom was a proud grandmother to Jennifer, Courtney, Pamela, Melissa, Norman “Murm,” Colton, Keeya, Kayla, Peter III, Gregory, Victoria, Timothy, Danica, Shelly, Faith, Frank, Christopher, Elena, Hailey, and Bailey.
She will be deeply missed by sister Keesha and her many chapans, nephews, nieces, extended family, and countless friends. The family apologizes to anyone unintentionally left out.
Mom was predeceased by her parents Henry and Flora Personius; her beloved husband Frank Young and her daughter Shelly. siblings - Elijah, Belinda, Mary and Harriet.
