Deborah Kim Keller (nee Fisher) was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 10, 1952, the first child of Don and Barb Fisher (nee Millar).
As the oldest in the family she took on the role of little momma to William (Bill) and Patricia (Patti), making sure they got to school ok. Summers were spent at the family cottage at Clearwater Lake, starting in May till winter close up. In the winter months the whole family would be at the curling rink most nights.
In the fall of 1970 Debbie moved to Winnipeg to go to school at Red River, this is where she met and fell in love with Leigh. In November of 1971, Leigh and Debbie had a baby girl who they loved and cherished but couldn’t keep. Dana was adopted into a loving family. They were reunited in 2007 and their relationship bloomed. Debbie finished her Clerk Typist course at Red River in July of 1972.
Debbie and Leigh were married in Winnipeg, MB on October 14, 1972, they moved to The Pas in 1973. They both started working at the mill, Debbie worked in mill stores until May 1979. In 1976 she was so excited to become an Auntie. Leigh and Debbie took on a very involved role of Aunt and Uncle to all nieces and nephews as they came along. They welcomed their much awaited second child, Christopher Leigh, on May 15, 1979. Chris was the light of Debbie’s world. After Chris’s birth her main job was mother and caregiver, she opened her home to her nieces and nephews when they needed to be taken care of. Debbie made sure that anyone in her birthday/anniversary book would receive a card or present in a timely manner and a cake of their choice if in town. Debbie decided that she would go back to finish her grade 12 and get her high school diploma in 86/1987.
Debbie was always up for a snuggle partner while she sat and crocheted or knitted, she loved her dogs Coco first then the grand dogs (Marlee and Lily). After Chris and Jenny got married and had their first child Jace, she was so happy to step in when Jenny went back to work when Jace was one month old, she looked after Jace until she had her heart attack in January of 2015.
Debbie spent many many months in hospital after her heart attack, with multiple surgeries. She had a VAD put in (Feb 2015) to bridge her to transplant. With having the VAD, she was unable to leave Winnipeg which was very hard on both of them. Thankfully they had many people come to Winnipeg to visit with them. The call came in about the heart transplant, March 24th, 2016 early in the morning and they were quickly flown to Edmonton. They were both excited to be able to move back to The Pas in June of 2016 after her successful transplant.
As a family they went on many trips, vacations to Disney, following Leigh on Union trips to do their own adventures and trips to visit family and friends. She also kept very busy, making clothes for Chris when he was young, cross stitching pictures, crocheting and knitting, finding new recipes to bake, trips to see the wildflowers and geese at Grace Lake was a highlight in the spring. She was an avid reader and passed this love along to her children. She also had a love for puzzles and games; when Chris got his first Nintendo she played Duck Hunt so much she had a bruise under her eye. Debbie also had a love of shopping - many trips were taken just to get out and see the new fashions at Northern Reflections or to buy the next book in a series. She also loved gardening, she loved trips to greenhouses to find the next new flower for her garden. Thursday afternoons were her day for curling before the grandkids came, then Thursday afternoons were a time to visit and have coffee with friend Shirley. Sundays were a day for Church and brunch to follow with the regular crew.
Debbie is predeceased by her husband Leigh, parents Don and Barb Fisher, In -laws Adam and Hazel Keller.
