On a stormy morning, Thursday, January 14th, 2021, Don passed away peacefully at St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, at the age of 82 years.
Don was born on Sunday, September 11, 1938 in Toronto, Ontario. At a young age, he moved to Beausejour, MB to live with his grandparents. After graduation, Don worked at numerous jobs in Manitoba and Ontario until he settled into his first job with concrete at Winnipeg Supply.
In the early 60’s, he met Lee and they were married in 1964. A year later they moved to Thompson to work for Thompson Supply.
In 1966, Don and Lee transferred to The Pas for 6 months for Don to run the concrete plant. He was then given the opportunity to purchase the business. It became Norcana Concrete and they made The Pas home. Don owned and operated it until he retired in 2018. The highlight of his career took him to the country of Kyrgyzstan in 1995/96 for six months to help pour concrete at 13,000 ft.
Don was a member of The Pas Fire Department, Town Council, Masons, Shriners and a Life member of The Pas Rotary Club. He dedicated many hours, products, space and equipment to many groups.
In the summers, he spent numerous hours tending to his garden or just sitting watching it grow. He took pleasure in sharing his crop with others. He especially liked growing roses which he shared with many ladies.
He loved hopping into his truck and going for drives with no destination in mind. You never knew where he’d end up visiting.
He was an avid reader of westerns and his love for history took him on a trip to Europe with his friend Evans to see the war memorials in 1985.
He also loved ice fishing.
He loved cats. There was almost always at least one in his home. He spent many afternoons at the cat shelter playing with them.
Beneath his tough exterior, he had a heart of gold. He was always willing to offer his time and wisdom to help others and the community.
Don’s memory will be cherished by his wife Lee, daughter Kim, son in law John and granddaughter Tenille. Son Randy, daughter in law Tara, grandchildren Riley, Maddox and Danika.
Daughter Lisa, son in law Ken, granddaughters Samantha and Chloe.
And many friends that were always there to help him. We thank you.
In 2017, Don mourned the passing of his grandson, Dallan.
He is predeceased by his parents, grandparents, brother Ron, and many aunts and uncles.
The Manych family would like to thank St. Anthony’s Hospital Doctors, Emerg and 2nd Floor staff for their care.
In keeping with family wishes, cremation will take place and a private family service will be held at a later date.
