Dorothy Ellen (Snider) Snyder

Dorothy Ellen Snyder (nee Snider) was born Monday, January 27, 1958 in Tisdale, Saskatchewan to Russell and Kathleen Snider. She was the 8th of 11 children.

Raised on the family farm outside of Bjorkdale, Saskatchewan, life back then was simple. Although they didn’t have much, they made due with the things that they had. From spending time raising animals and growing their own food, Dorothy worked hard to help out on the farm. She loved horseback riding, cycling, playing baseball and hockey.

Dorothy went to Bjorkdale School until Grade 10 and then spent time helping at the farm. In 1976, at the age of 18, Dorothy moved to The Pas to live with her sister Dieanna. Within a week of moving, she started a job as a Healthcare Aide at St. Paul’s Personal Care Home, where she worked for 28 years. She loved her job at St. Paul’s, it always brought her such joy to be able to take care of the “old people”. She loved listening to their stories, and often grew close to many of them, treating them as if they were her own family. She always encouraged her kids to find an “adopted” family member to befriend. On top of the love for her job, it gave her an opportunity to make friends with some of the people that grew to be lifelong best friends.

In 1978, Dorothy met Thomas Snyder and within the next year, gave birth to their first child – Jennifer, in April 1979. Dorothy and Tom were wed on June 30, 1979, only to exchange one vowel in her name. Four years later they had their second daughter – Jonie, in March 1983.

Dorothy was a wonderful mom, she was a born nurturer and gave all she had to her daughters, often times going without things in order to provide for them. In December 1996, Tom died and left her to raise the two girls on her own. She rose to the occasion and never gave it a second thought. Dorothy was the type of person who was hard working, quick witted, feisty and told you like it was. You never had to worry about where you stood with her.

After her retirement from healthcare, she spent a few years working for Cal’s Cab as a Dispatcher. She made many more friends there as the back coffee room was a hub for the local gossip. A few years later the business decided to scale back and her health prevented her from looking elsewhere.

This allowed her more time to spend with her girls, her family and with her friends.

 After a long battle with various health conditions, mom passed away unexpectedly at Flin Flon General Hospital on Friday, August 30, 2019, at the age of 61 years.

Dorothy leaves to mourn, her two daughters; Jennifer and Jonie (Jeremy); along with her siblings Richard (Jessie), Linda (Don), David (Kay), Dieanna (Philip), Kathleen, Randy (Kathy), Darlene, Colleen (Scott), Gordon (Bonnie); brother-in-law Danny; along with many nieces and nephews and also her long time best friends June Jackson and Linda Herman.

Dorothy was predeceased by her father Russell Snider; mother Kathleen Snider; sister Glenda Kurylowich;  husband Thomas Snyder; as well as her longtime friends Ann Colgan and Marge Vipond.
