Elena Catalano (nee Lizzi)
It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of our sister, wife, mother, grandmother, & friend, Friday, January 23, 2026, at St. Anthony's Hospital, The Pas, Manitoba, at the age of 86 years. Elena was born Sunday, September 3, 1939 in Guilmi, Italy. She spent her youth with her two younger siblings, Venera and Plinio in their small mountain town. It was here she also met her love Corinto, who left for Canada to find work, yet soon returned in 1959 to marry her and bring her to Canada.
They set up their home in The Pas, both working at the hospital, where she brought her seamstress trade from Italy. The first of three children, Mario was born in 1967. Later that year a move to Churchill was made and the family grew with the addition of Tony in 1969 and Tania in 1974. The family returned to The Pas in 1983 and have remained since. She was commonly known as Mrs’ C from her time at the MBCI cafeteria. Forever stopped over the years to be asked for cinnamon buns & pizza pops. Later she opened her store on Fisher Avenue where she shared her life long gift for sewing with the community.
In her retirement she spent her time doting on her grandchildren, who she loved dearly. She spent her days living at Pine View manor, enjoying bingo, skip-boo, and watching movies with her neighbors. Elena was a proud member of the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Catholic Women’s League, as well as the Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She was honoured for her lifetime of volunteering in 2020, with the Governor Generals Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers.
Elena is survived by her three children: Mario, Tony (Tania), and Tania (Trin). Her grandchildren: Charlie (Chelsea), Ashley, Lanaya (Caleb), Nico, Gianna, Trystin, Tye, and great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Plinio, sister Venera, and their families in Italy.
Elena was preceded by her husband of 54 years Corinto, parents Alfredo and Laura, brother-in-law Pierino, daughter-in-law Brenda, as well as many of her dear friends that she made over the years.
