Gail was born March 6, 1960, in Treaty 5 territory, The Pas, Manitoba, Canada. She died Sunday, November 3, 2024 at 3:20 AM in Treaty 1 territory, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada at the age of sixty-four. She passed away peacefully surrounded in the presence of her children, grandchildren and siblings. She is survived by her husband, Blair “Buck” Pelletier. Her children, Starina Sky Müller, Marco Marcel Malachi Müller, Angel Storm Pelletier, Alma Hart and Clayton Thomas-Müller. Her siblings Alec Hart, Roddy Hart, Kathy Thomas, Ovide Thomas, Lisa Thomas and Roanna Hart. Her father Rodrick Thomas and hundreds of grandchildren and kinship relations across Mother Earth.
Gail was a leader in the Indigenous Community as an expert in mental health. Our Mother was a life-long registered psychiatric nurse with a degree in forensic psychology and later a degree in teaching our language, Cree. Mom worked for many years in psych wards and in prisons helping Indigenous Men and Women. Her strength was immeasurable, she was tested her whole life starting with surviving being abducted by the RCMP as a five-year-old girl. She and her siblings attended Cross Lake Indian Residential School. When a fellow student burned down Cross Lake, she and her siblings were then moved to Guy Hill Indian Residential School. Our Mother lived through all of this and more, to become the Matriarch of our #Pukatawagan Cree Nation Clan. She never missed an opportunity to share with her children her journey through the Indian Residential School era so that we could understand Canada today.
Our Mother Gail never lost her ability to love unconditionally. She fought for justice actively throughout her life inspired and activated generations of our family toward decolonization, healing, unconditional love, forgiveness and peace. Our Mother survived Indian Residential School for eight years of her childhood and despite the neglect and abuse during her formative years at the hands of the Catholic Church and the settler colonial state of Canada our clan has continued to have a deep love and connection to the sacredness of our land and water. Our Mother Gail taught us that we are not poor, but wealthy in our relations. Our Mother Gail’s last request was to return home to Jetait to be buried under the pines, blueberries and cranberries. A final act of love in the story of Gail Pelletier is a return home with her family in tow to her land to be buried beside our clan’s former Matriarch, her mother, Pelagie Anderson.
