Gordon “Gawchin” George Constant Sr., of The Pas, Manitoba, born July 26, 1953, passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, only eighteen days after the passing of his beloved wife, the Late Verna Marie Constant (McGillivary), May 31, 1955 – March 6, 2026. Married in the 1980s, Gordon and Verna shared a lifetime of love, partnership, and devotion to their family. Their passing so close together is a testament to the bond they carried throughout their lives. Together they proudly raised three wonderful sons Gordon ‘Chico’ Jr, Joseph and Solomon.
Born and raised in Big Eddy, Manitoba, Gordon was known to friends and family as Gawchin, but to his grandchildren, he was simply Grampa Gordon — a title he cherished above all others. His grandchildren were his greatest joy. Every morning he would look at their photos and say, “That’s what keeps me going.”
Gordon worked as a large log line operator at The Pas papermill for 35 years, where he built lifelong friendships and eventually retired. A true outdoorsman, he was a hunter, fisherman, and trapper. Skilled in the bush and deeply connected to the land he grew up on, he passed that knowledge proudly to his three sons. His hunting buddies — Chingy, Sloop, Action, Lupoo, Sulla Moo, and many more — remained close to him throughout his life.
He was predeceased by his mother Christianne (nee Gott); grandparents who raised him Silas Constant and Bella Constant, his brother Andy Kematch, his sister Audrey Kematch, his uncle John W. Harris, and his aunties Mary E. Partridge and Kathleen Merasty, brother-in law Billy Samatte
Gordon is survived by his sisters Linda (Joe) Bonneau, Holly Kematch, Rita Kematch, Beverley Gornik (Bill), and Verna Samatte. His Brothers Bruce Jr Kematch, Christopher (Elmer) Kematch (Darlene), Archie Kematch, Barry Kematch, and Roger Kematch, cousins Sharon Bear, Georgina Constant, and Allan Partridge; his partner of 10 years, Ida Head; and by his three sons and their families:
