Aged 67 of The Pas, Manitoba, formerly of Dartmouth NS, Harold Whyte passed away July 19, 2021. Born in Halifax on September 8, 1953, he was the eldest son of and predeceased by James and Elizabeth (Rector) Whyte.
Growing up in Dartmouth, Harold did all the usual "boy" things: built forts, played baseball, football, and was in young peoples' clubs. Harold started school in Advocate Harbour then it was back to Dartmouth where he continued his education up to grade 11 at Prince Andrew High School.
Harold worked a number of jobs in his time, from joining the Navy at 17 serving 2 years, working at Driscoll's Texaco, bartending at the Kmart Plaza, and working on oil rigs. Then in 1976 he moved to Manitoba to work the mines in Snow Lake where he married Jan in 1980. Later moving his family to The Pas in 1993, completing his GED in 1992 then going to university to earn his degree in nursing (1994).
Working as a nurse took Harold to places and communities he loved farther north, but he still made time for a few trips a year back to Nova Scotia to visit family as well as his happy place, Advocate Harbour.
Harold is survived by his wife, Janice (Stragier), children Beth of The Pas, MB, Jim (Jen) of Reston, MB and, grandchildren Owen, Lily, and Harry; plus brothers Dave (Linda) of Dartmouth, NS, Pete (Elsie) of Porters Lake, NS, sister Mary (Greg) of Kingston, NS and brother Paul (Mary Lynne) of Dartmouth, NS, and many nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place as well as a memorial service on July 31st in Snow Lake, MB with a second service to be held on August 17th in Dartmouth, NS (Woodlawn United Church, 11 a.m. Covid protocols in place), with interment in Advocate Cemetery Wednesday, August 18th at 1 p.m.
