On Friday, March 8, 1935 in Regina, Harvey John Ander was born to Augustine and Frank Ander, the youngest of four siblings. He spent the younger years of his life near Amaranth, Lorette and eventually the family settled in Winnipeg.
His school years were busy with sports, part time jobs including deliveries for Ellice Inn most late evenings. The last four years in high school at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate he played end on the football team that set records of winning the Provincial Championships three years in a row 1950, 51, 52. The team was inducted into the Manitoba High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2016.
Bowling became another sport. He joined a league where he met his wife, Doreen, on September 17, 1954. They were married April 14, 1956. Many trips, fishing, camping and enjoying company of friends together. The children started to arrive in April 1959. The family settled in Charleswood and became actively involved with the Varsity View Community Club. Harvey was President when the club house burnt down but the new hall and hockey rink were soon up and running.
In January 1972, Harvey joined the staff at River Sawmills, The Pas moving his family here that summer. Various positions followed but he always kept his "salesman" personality and love of talking to people.
In 1987, Harvey was accepted as an Associate Member of the Royal Canadian Legion #19, The Pas and spent many hours volunteering, especially as a bingo caller, crib player and in the kitchen where the Ladies Auxiliary presented him with a Certificate as an Honorary Member of the Ladies Auxiliary. He was an avid crib player and with Doreen and journeyed on
many playoff tournaments for the Branch including a Dominion Playoff in Victoria BC. Always enjoying the companionship of members everywhere in their travels. Harvey passed away, Friday, September 26, 2025, at the Grace Hospital, Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the age of 90 years.
Harvey leaves behind his wife Doreen of 69 years; daughter Debbie Patenaude (Gordon); four grandchildren and six great grandchildren; brother George; sisters-in-law Eileen and Joan (Richard); many nieces and nephews across the country.
Harvey was predeceased by his daughter Patricia; son Gary; and daughter-in-law Diane; sisters Dorothy and Ella.
We say good-bye with sorrow but even more with gratitude for the years, the stories and the love we were so privileged to share.
