Dad was born on April 28th, 1957 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in The Pas, MB. He met the love of his life, our mom Denalda, when they were 18 years old. He was delivering a pot of potatoes for moms aunties, Florence, Jesse, Ann and Rubina, because they were helping prepare food for Annie and Edwin’s wedding. They said, “Gene’s coming Gin-ja go hide!” I guess they knew, if they laid eyes on each other, that was going be it for them. They married a few years later when they were 20, on July 22,1978. They had 3 girls together who he was very proud of and loved so much, they kept him on his toes. He would check on his girls every morning by driving by their homes to make sure they were safe. He had 5 grandchildren that he loved very much, he enjoyed teasing them and making them laugh. They were his hearts. He welcomed many other children/grandchildren as his own.
Dad enjoyed digging seneca root, playing NCI bingo, slots, and playing the lotto. He also enjoyed curling with his brothers and sisters. Dad always loved talking to babies and having conversations with them. He was also known as the “Boom-boom firecracker man” when he made the kids happy bringing fireworks at the annual family camp at Williams Lake.
Dad had various jobs throughout his life. He worked as a Commercial Fisherman, a logger with Moose Lake logging, a jail guard at The Pas Correctional Institute, at CN railway, and he finally found his dream job as a truck driver with Paul’s Hauling, Jim Olfery Hauling and Bobs Hauling. He so loved driving. In fact, he said that when he passes away he would be busy driving around all over the place waving at people.
