Isobel Mildred Halcrow (February 14, 1938 - April 30, 2023)
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our mom and grandma, Isobel Halcrow (Radcliffe) on Sunday, April 30, 2023. Mom was a prairie girl, born on her parents, Roy and Jane Radcliffe’s (McGregor) farm near Waskada, Manitoba on February 14, 1938.
She loved the prairies and often reminisced about listening to the meadowlarks and the fields of crocuses blooming in the spring. As a child, mom was surrounded by extended family, and she talked about large family dinners with aunts, uncles, numerous cousins and grandparents. She had an extraordinary memory and could always remember family and friends’ names, birthdays and anniversaries.
Mom’s love of learning and reading began at Hernefield School and continued throughout her life. She was a voracious reader and growing up she wanted to be an archeologist. She loved history and music, a love she shared with her children and grandchildren. While attending high school in Waskada she played in a band named Four Hits and a Miss, playing at southern Manitoba country dances. In The Pas, she sang in the Glee Club and was the Christ Church organist and choir member for many years.
Following high school in Waskada mom attended Normal School (teachers’ college) in Winnipeg. Her first teaching assignment was in Dand, MB, north of Deloraine from 1956 until 1959. She then started a 63 year long northern adventure beginning with Grandpa Radcliffe driving her to The Pas, where she had accepted a teaching position with the federal government on Opaskwayak Cree Nation. Later she taught with Kelsey School Division, UCN Adult Education and worked at The Pas Public Library.
Mom met our dad Jack in The Pas and they were married on July 16, 1960, in Waskada United Church. Mom and dad went everywhere and did everything together, spending all 62 years of their married life in The Pas. They spent most summers at Clearwater Lake camping and later at their cottage. In retirement, mom and dad spent many winters in Texas. Mom looked forward to all the music performances and dances hosted at the many retirement parks.
In recent years mom and dad enjoyed trips with family across Canada and Mexico. In the past few years, mom continued to read and recommend a wide genre of books to family and friends. She stayed active doing word puzzles, keeping up with current events, enjoying friendships – old and new, neighbors, and especially the ladies of her Christ Church family. Mom continued her interest and research in family history and passed it on to her family.
Many memories are left to be cherished by her children, Lori (Grant) Stubson, Harley (Tami) Halcrow, Jaqueline (Brian) Ackroyd, Suzanne (Jay) Restar, her grandchildren, Paige (Colton), Gaelen (Sage), Liam (Somya), Aiden (Rachel), Rowan, sister-in-law Edna Radcliffe and numerous nieces, nephews and her Lee, Radcliffe and McGregor cousins.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Christ Church Anglican Memorial Fund, Box 125, The Pas, MB, R9A 1K3.
