Karen Head Obituary

Karen was born Thursday, May 13, 1971 at the St Anthony’s General Hospital in The Pas, MB.

Karen attended Big Eddy Day School, Opasquia, Iskonekun & Joe A Ross school. She had several jobs in her early years starting at The Met Cafe, receptionist jobs at The Pas Friendship Centre, OCN social services, and Human Resources Centre in town (next to TPCI). Her mom always made her go “sub” her cree classes when she wasn’t available to work.

Karen was the second child born to Stephen & Mary Head, a younger sister to Cynthia but an older one to Charles, Serena & Susan. This meaning, as that saying says, how the second born is always often “the wild child” … and that indeed, was our Karen lol. Mom always told us, she was born “On Friday the 13th”, but after getting this together, we knew that wasn’t true after all. When attending Opasquia School, she was always getting into trouble & mom often got calls from the principals office. We always teased her about Motley Crue’s, “smoking in the boys room” video we always said, there you Karen, getting called to the principals office AGAIN!

In her early teens, she loved dancing which she was quite good at it. She often competed in “air bands”, and always placed. She was known for her most excellent dance skills. In August of 1988, she ran for Opaskwayak Indian Days as “Miss Iskonekun School” where she placed 2nd runner up. We were so proud of her.

Karen suffered type 2 diabetes in her early or mid 20’s where this awful disease caused her a double amputee of both her legs. But this DID NOT stop her from doing the things she loved, nor did it take her bubbly personality and humour she had right until the end. Even the doctor, that flew out with her to Winnipeg that day, confirmed how she was still joking around and such a happy person. Once she got her power chair, she sure enjoyed flying around the pride lands of Big Eddy, and Cow Head to go visit, sit around with Madeline, Harriet, Chas, baby Riley, Annie & Jenny. She also loved flying through the mall, on the bridge and through town. She loved every minute that she got to spend with her best friend Ernestine, who often took good care of her when she wasn’t feeling well. Even in the times it was self inflicted, taking her “care packages”, so she can nurse herself back to good health. She loved travelling and was a very good copilot. She passionately loved her family, boys, but more so her grandchildren. Karen received her nickname “Noonie” from her niece, Kimberly. It just came to her when she was learning how to talk, and Karen got stuck with that name since. Karen was in the delivery room with all 4 of her sister Serena’s kids, and asked her if she could be a Godmother to one of them? She eventually gave in & let her be one to her youngest, Glen Jr “June-bug”.  From there she had this special bond with him. She will be sadly missed by both of them.

Karen passed away suddenly on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 in Winnipeg, MB. At the St Boniface Hospital. At the age of 53 years. She will forever be missed by her boys, Tyson (Erin), Jordan (Colleen), Darwin (Renee). Adopted, Brandon, Josh, Edgar, Kylie, Brad, Summer, Jackie & Elyse. Grandchildren, Gerrod, Adriana, Kennedy, Kaylynn, Aurora, Carla & was expecting #7 in August! Sisters, Serena (Glen) & Susan (Danny). Nieces & nephews, Kimberly, Glen Jr, Sebastian, Marlin, Vanessa & Danielle. Her BFF’s & partners in crime, Ernestine Cowley (her top one) & Joyce Partridge.

She was predeceased by her boys, Gerrod & Dylan Head, parents, Stephen & Mary Head, siblings, Cynthia Scott & Charles Head, nephews, Wyatt & Ethan Flett.

If we forgot anyone it was not intentional.
