It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Kenneth Lloyd Wiens on Tuesday, March 18th, 2025 at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg Manitoba, at the age of 77, with family by his side.
Ken was born in Winnipeg Manitoba, May 10, 1947, to Sadie and Peter Wiens.
Peter worked for CIBC, where he was to relocate towns often, with the family in tow (Sadie, Allen, Kenneth). During this time, Ken and his older brother Allen had many good memories: fishing, hunting, biking and spending as much time as they could outdoors~ Ken enjoyed telling stories of him working on the Jansen Farm to erecting grain elevators throughout Rural Saskatchewan and eventually going to University in Saskatoon to become a Veterinarian to then pivoting and going to Winnipeg to complete his training in Radiology, eventually working in Winnipeg General Hospital (now the HSC).
During his time in Winnipeg, he met Janis ~ Soon marrying and moving from Winnipeg to The Pas where he began his career at St. Anthony’s Hospital. Ken and Janis lived on Cathedral, where they had started their family: Bradley and Gregory~
Ken, Janis and the boys- built a cabin at Clear Water Lake, eventually selling that cabin to begin the build of their forever home out on Rall’s Island. The Wiens Family, finished clearing the land and building their log home after a few years, all while living in a trailer on the lot, with their new baby, Lisa.
Rall’s Island and The Pas became Ken’s much loved home, surrounded by great friends, a great community and a property of nature and many animals~ Chickens, Ducks, Turkeys, Geese, Horses, Taffy, some cows, Porkchop and many dogs over the years.
Ken took interest in his kids’ passions—Brad with his Sled Dogs and Hunting, Greg with his skateboarding and bringing home the town skateboard ramp: where Greg and his friends would skateboard all weekend. Lisa and her horse, which was his own passion too. He loved his Roping nights with his horses Dutch, Catch, or Benny~ Where he made many great friends (too many to list) and great memories.
Ken loved Hunting, Fishing with his brother Al; Hiking, watching the birds and deer, snowmobiling, skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, any and all farming or gardening, and canoeing in the creek alongside his home. Many of Sundays Ken would be out trail riding all over the Island – often with Lisa, Dolly, Farol and many other neighbors, who saddled up along the way.
Ken loved spending time with his grandchildren, nieces and nephews. They all have so many fond memories of the fun and new things they had learned from Grandpa Ken. From skating on the creek, riding horses, going on nature walks, having wiener roasts, bon fires, to canoeing, and quading, and much more.
Ken loved nature and all animals. He was very fond of Jon’s turkeys - he would often message about them and ask how they were doing. One of the family’s last couple of memories of Ken was when he told a turkey joke and then when he formed the strength to laugh at the story we told of the turkeys laughing at Jesse.
As busy as he was, he still donated much of his time to his community: Union President, Regional Health Authority for two years and a Union Rep for many years; he was a very Active Member of Agricultural Society for over 20 years; The Pas Roping Club; Kinsmen; The Horse Club. And anything else that came his way.
Ken had 1000 stories, that many of us are fortunate enough to have in our “pocket books” – that we will forever reminisce and laugh until we cry about.
Ken made sure everyone was welcomed, advocated for and that they always had a friendly face to see. He truly did see the good in all people and had an unwavering way of making everyone around him feel at ease and feel like they were long time friends. He was a kind word, genuine encouragement, your biggest cheerleader, patience, comfort, wisdom, care. A true gentleman and a real cowboy. His motto in life was, give more than you ever take.
Ken loved his family, dearly~ He was so very proud of all of them~
Ken is survived by is his Wife Janis, Brother Allen (Eileen), Sister-in-Law Sharon (Dave), Son Greg, Daughter Lisa and Son-in-Law Jonathon. Nieces and nephews: Gayle (Ken), Stephen, Greg, Cliff, Ginny (Steve), Danny (Jan). Aunt Janet.
Grandchildren: Julianna, Johnny, Jesse, Kaas, Matsen.
And his Great Nieces and Nephews: Remi, Max, Channing, Vaughn, Maddison~
On March 18, 2025, Ken joined, in spirit, his Son Bradley, Mother Sadie, Father Peter, Mother-in-Law, Patricia, Sister-in-Law Cindy – where they will be happy to meet again…
The Wiens Family would like to send a special thanks to The Pas Cancer Care Unit, St. Anthony’s Hospital employees, HSC employees, and friends and family of Ken who gave insurmountable support during this journey.
