Lynden Marlow Obituary

It is with sadness that the family of Lynden Edwin Marlow announce his passing at St. Paul’s Residence on Friday, June 21, 2024 at the age of 93 years.

Lynden was the youngest child born to parents Albert and Dorothy (nee Feltham) in Fort Qu’Apelle, Saskatchewan on June 18, 1931.  He spent most of his childhood where his parents farmed around the areas of Poplar Point and Stonewall, Manitoba.

Lynden was very passionate about sports and with time his skills rapidly improved.  He excelled as a hardball pitcher during the summer months and a hockey defenseman during the winter months.  In the mid 1950’s his pitching skills did not go unnoticed and he was invited to try out for the St. Louis Cardinals.  Despite his unsuccessful attempt to enter professional baseball, he continued to play senior hardball.  In 1959 he joined The Pas Teepee’s of the Polar League and in the 1960 season was awarded the MVP for the season for his pitching and batting efforts.  The team remained active winning three of five championships.  In 2005 The Pas Teepees (1959-1964) was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame an honor he attended.

During the winter months, Lynden also played hockey in the role of defenseman.  Many enjoyed watching his passing skills and sportsman like play on and off the ice.  He would often say that a good wrist shot at the net is more accurate than a slap shot.  His photo is proudly displayed at the Roy H. Johnston Arena.

It was also during this time that Lynden moved to The Pas and worked briefly for Earl Nelson construction before forming Marlow Construction with his brother John.  They built many homes in The Pas and most are along the end strip of Cathedral Avenue.  Lynden retired from sports and during the winter months took on a coaching position in 1962 in the town of Quill Lake, Saskatchewan.  There he first laid eyes on his soon bride to be Helen Dyok.  Three months later, on June 22, 1962 they were married in Quill Lake.   Son, Tom was born in Quill Lake July 3, 1963.

Lynden purchased some land in The Pas (original Marlow homestead) and moved Helen and Tom to The Pas.  Lynden followed his father’s footsteps and began farming on his own, while continuing to do carpentry.  During that time, both the family and farm grew.  Children Frank was born in 1965, Walter 1966, Don 1969, and finally Lori in 1971.   When Lynden decided to semi-retire the boys purchased the farm and together formed Marlow Farms Incorporated.

With more time available to him, Lynden and Helen began going on bus tours.  They went on three memorable bus tours to BC, Branson, and Alaska.  Lynden also enjoyed puttering around the house weeding the garden and watering the flowers.  He enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up and spending time camping or at his son’s cabin at Clearwater Lake or fishing with his children.  During the Winter months, he also attended many Blizzard hockey games at the Gordon Lathlin Arena and frequently voiced his opinions to those in the crowd.

Life changed drastically for Lynden when his wife of almost 49 years, Helen passed away unexpectedly in 2011.  He remained living on the homestead for several years, but eventually decided that he needed safer accommodations for himself and moved to Valhalla Cooperative in town.  It was during that time he would often drive and meet his coffee buddies at Tim Horton’s to discuss the latest gossip.

Deteriorating health resulted in Lynden eventually moving to the Supportive Housing Unit in Northern View Lodge and for the past three years had resided at St. Paul’s Residence prior to his passing.  He moved into St. Paul’s Residence during COVID and he struggled with lack of socialization.  He received some further tragic news when his son Don passed away unexpectedly on June 19, 2021.  Despite all of these setbacks, he continued to remain as active as his body and mind would allow.  On June 21, 2024, the chapter of Lynden Marlow’s life closed…

Lynden will be sadly missed by his children, Tom (Heather), Frank (Roberta), Walter (Jackie), Lori (Domenic) and daughter-in-law Brigitte as well as grandchildren, Ryan (Jesse), Erik (Tyler), Lyle (Domanick), Justin, Dawson, Jordana (Joel), Brett, and Alexis as well as numerous extended family members.  He was blessed to meet his great-grandchildren, Olivia and Bennett.  Lynden was predeceased by his parents Albert and Dorothy, siblings Evelyn and John, wife Helen, son Don, as well as numerous in-laws.
