“Mayo” Marion Joan Nault (Stevenson), 84, of Ralls Island/The Pas, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at St. Paul’s Residence on February 6, 2022.
Mayo was pre-deceased by her husband Ralph “Tubby”, her parents Stan and Delia Stevenson of Mafeking, and her sister-in-law Eileen Stevenson. Mayo is survived by her brothers, Con Stevenson, Den (Val) Stevenson, sister Lorrette (Elmer) Formo, her children Ralph Jr. (Jo-Ann) Nault, Janine (Tom) Stait, Randy (Cheryl) Nault, Rick Nault, 7 grandchildren Dustin, Trevor, Kelly (Megan), Dennae (Chad), Cody (Desirae), Mitchel (Jen), Sharly (Alex) and 6 great grandchildren, Hailey, Madison, Freya, William, Nixon, and Victor.
Mayo was born July 7, 1937 in Birch River, Manitoba. She spent her childhood, growing up in Mafeking and then, after completing high school, moved to The Pas to work as a nurse’s aide and then secretary, at the sanatorium near The Pas airport at Clearwater Lake. It was while working there that she met her future husband Ralph “Tubby”, who was her cab driver on a return trip from The Pas to the sanatorium one afternoon.
Mayo and Ralph were married in Mafeking on August 9, 1957; after which, they relocated many times throughout Manitoba (Thompson, Winnipeg, Whitemouth, Leaf Rapids), before returning to The Pas in 1976.
Mayo obtained her hairstylist license in Winnipeg in the mid 1960’s and relocated to Whitemouth, where she and Ralph opened their own hair salon and barbershop. She continued to “ply her trade” at home and/or at other salons until she opened Mayo’s Hairstyling at the Otineka Mall, OCN/The Pas. She continued to work as a hairstylist to, in some cases, 4 generations of families until her retirement in the early 2000’s.
Mayo loved her home on Ralls Island and took great pleasure in tending to her flowers, garden, and yard. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and many laughs and good times over cocktails “on the island”.
Cremation and a private family service will be held in The Pas, and a celebration of Mayo’s life will take place later, in July 2022, at Ralls Island.
The family would like to thank Dr. Marie Noel, Cindy Leclerc, Sharon Senyk, the nurses, aides, care workers, and all the wonderful staff at St Paul’s Residence. Their excellent care, concern, compassion, cooperation, and assistance, has been invaluable and very much appreciated over the past many years.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba, in Mayo’s memory.
COME and GO CELEBRATION OF LIFE, SATURDAY, JULY 9, 2022, FROM 1-4 PM, 465 KRYSCHUK ROAD, RALLS ISLAND.
