It is a deep sadness, surrounded by family, we announce the passing of a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, godmother, mother in law and friend, Mary Katherine Greenleaf on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at the age of 75 years in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the St. Boniface Hospital.
Mary is survived by her loving son Randy (Kayla); sister Jane (Walter) Cook; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, chapans and other relatives too numerous to mention. If we left anyone out, it is not intentional.
Mary shared a special bond with her grandson, August, who will miss her dearly. Her niece; Flora Comeau, cousin; Grace, and her close friend; Sylvia, both of whom she considered each a sister.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Zaccheus “German”; children, Loretta Jane, Lydia Grace, John George, and Roderick Delbert; parents, William and Flora Ann; sister, Nancy ( Kevin); brothers, George (Etta), Matthew, and Colin; granddaughters, Crystal Greenleaf and Larissa Crane; nephews, Matthew Cook, John Cook, and Desmond Bignell; niece, Victoria Cook; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann (Alex) Fosseneuve and Angie Dumas.
Mary was born in The Pas, Manitoba on Thursday, June 15, 1950. In her early years, her family resided in Moose Lake, Manitoba. She was raised there until the age of 9 when her family moved to The Pas/Opaskwayak, Manitoba. Mary had an "average" childhood. She attended school at The Pas Indian Band School, and was a survivor of Brandon Indian Residential School. On March 4, 2001, she lost the love of her life Zaccheus “German”, then shortly afterward moved to Winnipeg. Mary found employment at the Swampy Cree Receiving Home as a front desk clerk in which she loved.
Mary became ill with heart disease after her stroke and moved back home to be close to her family. She put up a "good fight" battling this disease. When she became more ill and the doctors told her there was nothing else to be done, she made it a point to direct her last wishes.
Mary will be remembered for her large capacity for love and care of everyone around her. She had many friends and would make new ones as easily as taking in a breath. She had a heart of gold, and she loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren unconditionally. She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by us all.
