May Gladys Reader was born Wednesday, November 5th, 1941 in The Pas, Manitoba. She lived out at Reader Lake the first years of her life. She attended school in The Pas and graduated from high school there. The following year she attended Prairie Bible Institute in Three Hills, Alberta. After four years she graduated from Prairie in 1963 in preparation for missionary service. While in Prairie she developed a passion for Ireland and wanted to serve the Lord there. She was introduced to a Literature Crusade that had Christian book stores in Ireland and applied to this organization, was accepted and moved to Ireland. She mainly worked in Dublin and Limerick in the bookstores. She was there for about 20 years and made many good friends there. Some of whom came to visit her when she moved back to Canada.
When our Mom and Dad got to the point where they needed care, May felt directed by God to return to The Pas and care for our parents. She did this with great patience and love. She cared for them at Reader Lake till they had both passed away. She continued to live out at Reader Lake till she needed care herself. Robin spent many hours blowing the snow out of her drive way and helping her cope with living in the bush. Robin and Sandy Reader helped May realize that she needed care and the best option was to move into The Pas to Northern View Lodge. Earl and Shirley Reader also cared for May as did many friends from the Alliance Church and the area. A big thanks to all who helped care for May in her final years.
May never married and I always wondered if it had anything to do with her having three brothers. There is one little story I remember from May’s time in Ireland. Any one that can remember 30 or 40 years ago like it was yesterday might remember that at that time there was a lot of unrest in Ireland. Belfast and Dublin were political hot spots. I am under the impression that maybe that is why May ended up in Limerick. It was a little safer there and they moved her for her own protection. May said she got nervous with some of the people that came into the bookstore. I think she even mentioned it a time or two to the Lord. May always loved dogs and she said there was this big old dog that started to come and sit by the door to the shop. He seemed to be there checking who was coming in. If some ruffians came in, she would bring her big dog in. She said she never knew where he came from or where he lived, she just called him, her guardian angel.
May passed away, Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at her home at Northern View Lodge, The Pas, Manitoba, at the age of 83 years.
May was predeceased by our Mom and Dad, Grace Reader and Joseph Gerald Reader; also our brother Jim Reader and his wife Mary Reader, and Gail Reader and Jarred Armstrong.
