Obituary

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Morris Gareau on Wednesday, August 23, 2023. Morris passed away peacefully at the age of 91 in the Flin Flon Personal Care home with his wife Elsie by his side.

Morris was born November 21, 1931, in Prince Albert, SK where he resided until his family moved to The Pas when he was 15 years old. Morris was born the 10th child of 16 children to Alexander and Irene Gareau.

Morris worked on many, many different jobs over the years. It started in 1948 when he made his way to Churchill where he was employed with the National Harbor board working heavy equipment. Over the next few years, he moved around from back working on his father’s farm to running heavy equipment for various contractors throughout Northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan and driving cab in The Pas.

From 1953 to 1957 he was back in Churchill working for The Department of National Defence as a heavy equipment operator. Then it was back to The Pas to drive Taxi and it was during this time he met his soon-to-be wife, Elsie. They were married on May 8, 1959, and then in 1960 they both returned to Churchill and Morris returned to the Department of National Defence to run heavy equipment.

Then in 1963, having enough of the cold weather, they took the opportunity to move to Campbell River, BC where Morris was employed by McMillian Bloedel running heavy equipment. It was there in Campbell River BC that their family grew with the welcoming of son Wayne.

In 1969 they moved to Fernie, BC where Morris worked for Kaiser Coal in Sparwood before becoming self-employed in the Taxi and Motel business in Fernie in 1970. In 1972 their family grew with the birth of their daughter Shelly. They continued with the Motel and Taxi business until March of 1973 when they made the decision to be closer to family and move back to The Pas.

Here in the Pas Morris worked with Churchill Forest Industries until 1980 before tackling self-employment once again as an owner operator of a gravel haul truck spending most of the next 6 years working on various road building projects in the North. After 33 years of working behind the wheel of a truck, taxi or a piece of heavy equipment. Morris took a job as a trade’s helper with Manitoba Government Services in 1981 until his retirement in 1993.

Morris loved to drive, he got behind that wheel and didn’t want to stop until he made it to his final destination. He loved driving so much that even during retirement he would drive vehicles far and near for the Car dealerships here in The Pas.

Morris was known for his quick wit, sense of humour and teasing. He always had a joke up his sleeve and enjoyed making people laugh. Morris loved to fish, in summer and winter, but it was well known that he didn’t always come home with a catch. He loved roaming around the lake in a boat, camping with family and friends and loved watching hockey. He never wasted an opportunity to spend time with family and friends and he treasured family life, keeping in touch with his brothers and sisters meant the world to him. Morris also much enjoyed time spent with his Children, Grandchildren and great grandchildren. One of his highlights of the day was getting together with his friends “the boys” for coffee where they would share their knowledge and their stories.

Morris will be deeply missed by his wife Elsie of 64 years;  his son Wayne Gareau; daughter Shelly Trampe (Bruce); grandchildren Lindley (Dave), Jessica (Raad), Ashley (Jamie), Chantel (Dylan); and great grandchildren Logan, Dylan, Jonathan, Aurora and Verna along with numerous family and friends.
