Peter Benyk Obituary

Peter Benyk of Cold Lake, Manitoba passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2020 at St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, Manitoba, at the age of 88 years.

Peter was born on Saturday, July 11, 1931 at Rorketon, Manitoba.  He was the youngest of 4 brothers and 4 sisters.  At an early age he set out to make his way in the world. He spent time in British Columbia working in the forestry industry before making his way up to Northern Manitoba.  He worked for his brother for a time in his store and also commercial fished, until realizing it was not a very lucrative arrangement for him.  In 1962 he met Sharron Hatch and they began their life together. Peter purchased Sherridon Taxi in 1964 and was still driving taxi till January 2020. He and Sharron started Sharron’s Outfitting Service in 1972 and it remains a very popular business 48 years later. Peter and Sharron were very welcoming and generous to anyone in need and made many friends over the years. They were always willing to lend a hand.

Peter was an avid trapper, hunter and fisherman.  He would go to his trapline before freeze up in the fall and return in time for Christmas with a sleigh full of fur. Peter spent a great deal of time at his cabin at Lundar, Manitoba, hunting deer, elk, geese and making many friends.  He enjoyed participating in the All Canada Goose Shoot at Lundar, which his team won in 2007.  He planted a garden every summer and always had a bumper crop to harvest if he won the battle against the groundhogs.  Every spring he would start putting out grain for the ducks and would continue feeding them all summer.  This resulted in a great deal of ducks once the spring nesting was completed.  The ducks knew his voice, as he would just have to call and they would all flock in to be fed.  Peter enjoyed life and bought his family and himself anything that he thought they might like from ponies to vehicles.  He enjoyed the fruits of his labour.

Peter is survived by his daughter Debi (Johan); son Vince (Donna); his brother John; sister Pearl; and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased in death by Sharron; and three brothers and three sisters.
