Rev. Deacon Michael Dickens, eldest son of Charlie and Irene Dickens, was born Monday, September 2, 1946 in Flin Flon, Manitoba.
Mike was raised and schooled in Flin Flon. He met Shirley Mason in Flin Flon and they were united in marriage November 16, 1974.
Mike was a 5th class power engineer working at the arena in Flin Flon and Winnipeg, and later at Seven Oaks Swimming Pool in Winnipeg. When the family moved back to Flin Flon in 1982, Mike began working at the Flin Flon General Hospital on maintenance. Later moving to The Pas, in 2001, to be a maintenance manager at St. Anthony’s Hospital.
Mike wore many hats. He volunteered just about every night of the week. He started with Scouts in Flin Flon. He was a volunteer firefighter for 16 years in Flin Flon. He was also a CPR instructor and instructed future instructors. He was a Sub-Lieutenant in the Navy League in Flin Flon. He also became an ambulance attendant in Flin Flon.
After retirement in 2004, Mike worked at the Chevy dealership until his first heart attack. Then he worked at CJAR on the Sunday morning show. He had a second heart attack three years ago, then his health declined. He joined Rotary The Pas and was a recipient of the Paul Harris award. He was also President three times.
Mike was no stranger to hospitals, at an early age he was stricken with rheumatoid arthritis. He never let it slow him down. Mike was involved in church at an early age as well. He was a lay reader in Flin Flon and The Pas when both churches were without a minister, he stepped in to help. About seven years ago he was ordained as Reverend Deacon Michael Dickens.
Mike passed away peacefully, Monday, December 21, 2020, in the Flin Flon General Hospital, Flin Flon, Manitoba, at the age of 74 years.
Mike was predeceased by his parents Charlie and Irene; infant sister Laurie; brothers Barry and Chris; in-laws Edith and William Mason; sister-in-law Donna Dickens; brother-in-laws Metro Gricholski and Dan Dechief.
Mike is survived by his wife of 46 years, Shirley; sons Cameron (Winona), Carey (Jennifer); daughter Jodie (Shawn) Ricard; 7 grandchildren Noah, Eden, Naomi Dickens, Cera and Emma Ricard, Gryfinn and Callie Dickens; his sister Lindsay Dechief; and numerous American cousins, nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Canadian Diabetes Association, 200-310 Broadway, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 0S6, The Christ Church Anglican Memorial Fund, Box 125, The Pas, Manitoba R9A 1K3, or the St. Peter & St. James Anglican Church, 74 Church Street, Flin Flon, Manitoba R8A 1K7, would be appreciated by Mike’s family.
In keeping with family wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held at this time.
