Verna Marie Constant (McGillivary), age 70, passed away on Friday, March 6, 2026, at 5:30 a.m. at St. Anthony's Hospital in The Pas, Manitoba. Her passing leaves a deep ache in the hearts of her family, friends and all who were touched by her gentle spirit.
Born Tuesday, May 31, 1955 in The Pas, Manitoba and raised in northern Manitoba, Verna spent her younger years in The Pas, where she attended Keewatin Community College and studied clerical bookkeeping. Throughout her life she worked various jobs, always bringing with her a strong work ethic, humility and a quiet determination.
Verna was known for her kindness and generosity; she gave freely, even in times when she had little herself. To her grandchildren, she was lovingly known as Kookum Brown, a name that carried warmth, humour and deep affection. Her grandchildren adored her and she cherished each one of them.
A survivor of both the Guy Hill Residential School at Clearwater Lake and the McKay Residential School in Dauphin, Manitoba, Verna carried the weight of those experiences with honesty and courage. She spoke openly about her time there, ensuring her story—and the truth—would not be forgotten. At 18, she returned home to The Pas, where she later married her sweetheart, Gordon George Constant Sr., with whom she built a life rooted in love, resilience and family.
Verna was the proud mother of four sons, whom she loved with all her heart, mind and soul. Her devotion to her family was unwavering and her strength, humour and compassion will continue to guide them.
Verna was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Helen McGillivary; her siblings Patsy, Raymond, Gordon, David (Sally) McGillivary, Marilyn (Cole) McGillivary; grandson Shawn McGillivary; and her nephews Daryl and Henry. Their memories remained close to her heart throughout her life.
She is survived by her husband, Gordon George Constant Sr.; and her four sons: Gordon “Chico” Constant (Janet Lowther), and grandchildren Teneshia, Kenzie, Jordan (Mandy), and Tsiana; Joseph Silas Constant Sr., and grandchildren Larissa, Tianna, Brooke, Joseph Jr., Reece, Precious, and Alycia; Solomon Raymond Constant Sr., and grandchildren Solomon Jr., Alyiah, Darian, Darius, and Adrian; Craig Constant, and grandson Phillip (Parker, Carter and Nathan).
Verna is also survived by her siblings: Linda Stevens (Late Perley Stevens), Ann Shirley McGillivary, Harry (Lee-dot), and Trina McKay (Brian McKay), who remained an important part of her life, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews who loved her deeply.
Verna’s legacy is one of love, generosity and survival. She will be remembered for her gentle presence, her fierce devotion to her family and the way she made others feel seen and cared for.
